# Building a Scene: Who Wants What

A scene works when each character wants something and something is in the way. Change what one of them wants and the scene changes, which is why actors and writers start there.

## Ready when they can

- State what each character in a short scene wants
- Name the obstacle between a character and what they want
- Predict how a scene changes if one character's want is swapped
- Explain why a scene with nobody wanting anything is boring to watch

## Lesson: Give each character something to want

A scene starts with want. A girl wants to win the big game. A boy wants to find his lost dog. Want is the engine. With no want, nothing moves.

**Example.** Then put something in the way. The team is losing. The dog ran into a dark forest. Want plus block makes conflict. That clash is what keeps us watching.

Let them try, fail, and try again. Each try grows harder. Writers call this raising the stakes. A turning point shifts the path. A low point feels hopeless, so the end lands.

**Tip.** Plan your own scene on paper. Name what each one wants. Name the block. Swap one want and watch the whole scene change.
