# Composing Music

Improvise and compose short pieces for a purpose: build and layer patterns of pitch, rhythm, tempo and dynamics; repeat, vary and order ideas into a shape, and explain the choices behind the finished piece

## Ready when they can

- Create a short piece with a clear beginning, middle and end (e.g. layering loops in a music app)
- Use musical elements deliberately (e.g. getting louder towards the ending, a low repeated pattern under a tune)
- Explain the choices in their piece (e.g. 'I made it slow and low because it's the sad part')

## Lesson: Composing your own piece of music

Composing means building your own short piece on purpose. You choose pitch (how high or low), rhythm (long and short beats), tempo (how fast or slow), and dynamics (how loud or soft). Then you repeat, change, and order ideas so the piece has a beginning, middle, and end.

*(drawing: A piece has a shape: parts that come in an order and build toward something.)*

**Example.** Zara builds a track in a music app. She loops a low drum pattern again and again under everything, then layers a bright tune on top, and slowly turns up the volume toward the end because that is the exciting part.

*(drawing: Zara's volume grows from start to end, so the ending feels big.)*

**Tip.** A good composer can always say why: why it's slow here, why that pattern repeats, why it gets quiet before the ending. Explaining your choices is part of the job, not an afterthought.

**Recap.** Composing means shaping pitch, rhythm, tempo and dynamics on purpose, then explaining why you chose them.
