# Dances People Do: Folk, Social and Stage

Some dances are done in a village or a club with everyone joining in, and some are made to be watched from seats. The difference decides who the dance is for and how it is learned.

## Lesson: Dances we join, dances we watch

Some dances invite all to join, like the tarantella and the Hokey Pokey. Others are built for seats to watch. That split shapes who the dance serves and how it is learned.

**Example.** The tarantella is a folk dance from Italy, named for Taranto. Families dance it at weddings and feasts to fast tunes, shaking small tambourines. You do not need a school to learn it. You learn it by watching and joining in.

The Hokey Pokey is a social dance. You stand in a circle, and the song tells you each move. No written guide is needed to join. It spreads from camp to school as kids copy it.

Low squats with kicks mark Russian folk dance and the Hopak from Ukraine. In a staged Hopak performance, dancers perform it for an audience. The crowd watches and does not join in, unlike the Hokey Pokey ring where all join.
