# Digital Images as an Art Medium

An image made of pixels can be copied perfectly, edited without trace and generated by a model. That changes what an original is and what the artist's decision actually was.

## Lesson: Pixels, edits and generated pictures

A digital image is made of pixels, which are numbers, so every copy matches exactly. There is no single original object. A daguerreotype was one sharp plate with no copies, while digital files copy forever with no loss.

**Example.** A Mars rover took 55 separate shots, and scientists stitched them into one clean portrait with the camera mast edited out. Nothing in the parts was fake, yet no single moment ever looked like that. Software edits can leave no trace at all.

A model can picture things that never existed, like a famous figure showing an impossible gadget, since it builds from learned patterns instead of light. Ask who posted first, whether trusted sources agree, and what the maker itself says.

**Tip.** When a model draws, the artist choice left is the subject, the prompt, which results to keep, and honesty about the process. Copying a living style without asking starts rows over credit and consent, so credit sources or label the work as generated.
