# Four Eras of Western Classical Music

Baroque, classical, romantic and modern name four stretches of European music, each with its own habits about size, tune and feeling. Knowing the four gives a listener somewhere to put a piece they have never heard.

## Ready when they can

- Put the four eras in order and give rough dates for each
- Name a composer per era and one thing that composer is known for
- Hear an unfamiliar piece and place it in an era with a reason drawn from the sound
- Describe one change between eras, such as the orchestra growing or the tune getting freer

## Lesson: Four eras, four sound worlds

Western classical music runs Baroque, then Classical, then Romantic, then Modern, in that order. Rough dates: Baroque 1600 to 1750, Classical 1750 to 1820, Romantic 1820 to 1900, Modern 1900 onward.

**Example.** Pin one composer to each era. Bach and his fugues stand for Baroque, Mozart and his clear balanced tunes for Classical, Tchaikovsky and his huge surging feelings for Romantic, Stravinsky and his jagged surprising rhythms for Modern.

Track one change across the eras: the orchestra keeps growing and the tune keeps loosening. A small neat band playing orders becomes a giant crowd pouring out feeling.

**Tip.** Hearing something new, place it by sound first. Neat and decorated points Baroque, balanced and tidy points Classical, huge and stormy points Romantic, strange and rule-breaking points Modern.
