# Listening to a Whole Piece and Saying What Happens

Given six minutes of unfamiliar music, a listener can track what enters, what returns and where the piece turns. Saying it out loud is the whole skill.

## Ready when they can

- Describe a piece in order: what starts it, what enters next, where it changes
- Use the right words for tempo, dynamics, texture and instrumentation
- Name the moment a piece turns, and say what turned it
- Give a judgement about the piece backed by something that actually happens in it

## Lesson: Say what the music actually did

Take six unfamiliar minutes and track them in order: what starts it, what enters next, and where it changes. Saying it aloud in order is the whole skill.

Use the working words. Tempo names the speed, dynamics name loud and soft, texture names thick or thin layers, instrumentation names who is playing. Right words beat big adjectives.

**Example.** Name the turning moment and what turned it, like drums dropping out so a lone violin stands exposed. Then give your judgement backed by something that truly happened, not only whether you liked it.

**Tip.** Listen once without judging. On the next pass, stamp three moments: start, entry, turn, and hang every sentence on one of them.
