# Listening to Music

Listen with concentration to a wide range of music: pick out instruments and voices, describe how pieces change (faster, slower, louder, quieter) and recall sounds and short patterns from memory with growing accuracy

## Ready when they can

- Listen to a piece of music all the way through and describe what they noticed (e.g. 'the drums came in halfway')
- Identify familiar instruments or voices by sound alone (e.g. piano vs guitar, one singer vs many)
- Recall and describe a short rhythm or tune after hearing it (e.g. spotting when a melody comes back)

## Lesson: Listening to Music

Good listening means paying close attention. Listen to a whole song from start to end. Notice what happens along the way.

*(drawing: This song starts quiet, then grows louder and louder.)*

**Example.** Theo listens to a whole song. Halfway through, drums join in. He says, 'the drums came in halfway.' That is real listening.

**Tip.** Instruments sound different. A piano rings smooth and clear. A guitar has a twangy, plucked sound. Drums go thump and bang.

**Tip.** If a tune comes back later, you may remember it. Hum it back in your head. That helps you spot it again.

**Recap.** Listen all the way through, notice the changes, and remember the tune.
