# Movements: Why Painting Kept Changing

## Lesson: Why painting kept changing

Renaissance, impressionism, cubism, and abstraction are labels for groups who agreed what a picture was for. Each movement reacted to what came before it and to the world around it. Learn them in order, with one visual giveaway each.

**Example.** The impressionists rejected dark studio finishes and exact drawing. They carried easels outdoors to catch changing light and weather. Once cameras captured one exact view, painters asked what a picture could do that a photo could not.

Braque and Picasso faced a flat canvas and a solid world. They broke guitars, bottles, and faces into geometric pieces and showed several views at once. A cubist face may pair a front view eye with a side view nose.

**Tip.** Abstraction drops objects entirely yet stays painting. A Kandinsky holds the eye with colour, shape, and balance alone. Judge each movement by its own aim, not by the rules it threw away.
