# Scales, Keys and Musical Mood

Explore scales as ordered pitches with patterns of larger and smaller steps. Learn how a key combines a home note with a scale, compare major and minor, and explain why moving a song to another key can help a singer. Mood gives clues but does not prove the key.

## Ready when they can

- Explain that a scale arranges pitches in order and can provide notes for a tune, while a tune may also use notes outside that scale
- Compare major and minor examples by listening, describe their moods, and explain why mood alone does not prove whether music is major or minor
- Show that major and natural minor scales follow patterns of larger whole steps and smaller half steps
- Explain what it means that a song is in a key, and why two singers might want it moved

## Lesson: Scales, keys and mood

You have learned note names and how a stave shows pitch. A scale puts pitches in order using a pattern of gaps. Tunes often draw on a scale but can use other notes too. C major goes C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. The two Cs are an octave apart. Count both ends as notes; count a gap only between neighbours.

*(drawing: Including both Cs gives eight notes with seven gaps between them. This octave spans twelve semitones.)*

On a piano, moving to the nearest key, black or white, is one semitone, or half step. Two semitones make a whole step. A major scale's gaps are 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1 semitones. A natural minor scale uses 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2. Starting on another pitch keeps each pattern's gap sizes unchanged.

*(drawing: The marks show C major. C to D spans two small gaps; E to F spans one. This is a pitch-distance line, not a piano keyboard.)*

A key has a home note, the tonic, and a scale. Sharps raise notes by a semitone; flats lower them. A key signature lists usual sharps or flats. C major and A minor share an empty signature, but their home notes differ. Check the tonic and note pattern to tell them apart.

Major music often sounds bright or cheerful, and minor music darker or serious. These are common impressions, not rules for every tune. Tempo, rhythm and instruments also affect mood. A sad major tune or a lively minor tune is possible. Changing major to minor changes the scale pattern.

Transposing moves every pitch up or down by the same distance. Keep the gaps between notes and the rhythm unchanged. A major tune stays major when transposed. If high notes are uncomfortable for a singer, a lower key may help. Playing more quietly changes loudness, not pitch.

**Recap.** Scales have patterns of pitch gaps. A key has a tonic and a scale. Mood is a clue, not proof. Transposing moves pitches equally while keeping their gaps and rhythm.
