# The Camera as an Art Tool

A camera records light through a lens, and the photographer still chooses framing, moment and focus. Once photographs could be made, painters stopped needing to be the only record of what things looked like.

## Ready when they can

- Say what the lens does and what the sensor or film does
- Name three choices a photographer makes: what is in frame, when to press, what is sharp
- Explain one way photography changed what painters chose to paint
- Look at a photograph and say whether it is a record, an argument or a composition, with a reason

## Lesson: The camera is a tool, you are the artist

Light bounces off your subject and enters through the lens. The lens bends that light and focuses it to a sharp point. The sensor, or film in an old camera, records the focused light as a picture.

You still make three big choices. You choose what sits inside the frame, and opening the lens wide can melt the background into soft blur. You choose the exact moment to press, and you choose what stays sharp.

**Example.** Imagine you photograph your friend jumping off a swing. If you press early, she is still on the seat. If you frame only her shoes, the photo is about the jump, not the park. If you focus on her face, the bushes behind melt into soft colour.

**Tip.** Before cameras, painters were the only way to record faces and places. Once photos took over that job, painters were free to paint light, feelings, and scenes no camera could catch. When you look at a photo, ask if it is a record of what happened, an argument trying to persuade you, or a composition built for beauty, and give your reason.

**Recap.** The lens focuses light for the sensor to record, while you decide the frame, the moment, and the focus.
