## Lesson: Whose art hangs in the museum

A national museum buys works with its funds. People also give or leave works as gifts. Rulers sometimes moved works there by law. And some objects were taken during wars or empire rule.

Collectors and critics once praised mostly European men. They called other work craft or folk art and skipped it. That is why women and many African, Asian, and Indigenous artists are missing from old displays.

**Example.** Take a mask taken from a temple long ago. One side says it was grabbed without consent and should go home. The other side says the museum kept it safe and shows it to millions. A fair answer weighs both sides.

**Tip.** A curator picks what to show, writes the labels, and plans each room. Those picks decide which artists you meet and which story you hear. So ask whose voice is missing.
