## Ready when they can

- Name two sources of campaign money and say what each donor might expect
- Explain how targeting lets a campaign tell different groups different things
- Give one rule countries use to limit the effect of money, and one way around it

## Lesson: Money, messages and votes

Running for office costs a lot of money. The money a campaign raises changes which candidates get picked, what promises they make, and who ends up winning. That is why campaign money causes heated debate.

Money comes from small donors giving little each and big donors giving large sums. Big donors may expect something back, like a friendly vote after election day. When you follow the money, you see who a candidate may answer to afterwards.

Most voters never meet a candidate, so coverage decides what they hear. Reporters and ads set the agenda, and horse-race coverage reports who is ahead rather than what each side plans. Targeted ads go further: they let one campaign tell different groups different things.

**Tip.** Countries fight back with rules, like caps on gifts. One side says limits guard fairness, the other says giving money speaks. Watch for the workaround: when one channel closes, money often flows through outside groups or new ad formats.

**Recap.** Money picks the message, coverage picks the audience, and rules try to keep the race honest.
