# Community Helpers and Leaders

Who holds authority in a community and why: mayors, judges, police officers, teachers and principals; how each role helps, how everyone plays a part, and how people work together to fix local problems

## Ready when they can

- Match community roles to what they do (e.g., 'a judge decides if a rule was broken', 'a mayor leads the town')
- Explain why a person in authority gets to make certain decisions (e.g., the principal decides school rules)
- Give an example of people working together to improve their community (e.g., a park clean-up, a food drive)

## Lesson: Who Helps Run Our Community?

Your community has many helpers. A mayor leads the whole town. A judge decides if a rule was broken. Police officers keep people safe. A principal makes rules for the school.

*(drawing: First the swing breaks. Then someone tells the mayor. Then it gets fixed.)*

**Example.** Two kids both say a toy is theirs. A judge listens to both sides. Then the judge decides who is right.

**Tip.** You can help your community too. Join a park clean-up with your family. Bring cans to a food drive. Many small helpers make a big difference.

**Recap.** Leaders and helpers each have a job, and working together fixes problems.
