# Comparative Advantage and the Gains from Trade

A country gains by making whatever it gives up least to make, even when its trading partner is better at making everything. Comparing opportunity costs rather than raw output is what explains the extra production trade creates, and what a tariff redistributes at a cost.

## Ready when they can

- Work out each country's opportunity cost from an output table and say who should specialise in what
- Show with figures that both countries can end up with more of both goods than before trade
- Explain why being better at everything does not remove the case for trading

## Lesson: Why even the best still gains by trading

Absolute advantage means making more of a good with the same resources. Comparative advantage means giving up less of other goods to make it. The second idea matters more for trade. Each country should specialise where its opportunity cost is lowest, then swap. Opportunity cost is what a country gives up of other goods to make one more unit.

**Example.** One worker in Alvia makes 10 wheat or 5 cloth, while one in Betta makes 4 wheat or 4 cloth. In Alvia, 1 cloth costs 2 wheat. In Betta, 1 cloth costs 1 wheat. Betta gives up less, so Betta should make cloth and Alvia wheat. That table of outputs is exactly this calculation: work out each sacrifice per unit and pick the smaller one.

A country can be better at making everything and still gain from trade. This feels wrong, but the logic holds. Even the best producer has a weakest best skill, and buying that good from abroad frees its workers for what they do brilliantly. Say it plainly: being best at all goods does not mean having the lowest cost in all goods.

**Tip.** Cutting barriers like tariffs lets each country sell more of what it makes cheaply and buy more of the rest. The result is more of both goods on both sides: total output before trade sits below total output after, and specialisation created the extra pile. The agreed swap rate must sit between the two opportunity costs for both sides to gain.

**Recap.** Compare sacrifices, not raw output, and let each side make what it gives up least to make.
