## Ready when they can

- Name four protections a defendant has, and say what abuse each one exists to prevent
- Explain what judicial independence means and one thing that protects it
- Say what a court can do when a government acts beyond its powers

## Lesson: What makes a trial fair

Courts decide what the law means when people disagree about it. Through judicial review, a court can strike down a law or a government action that goes too far. Those rulings then shape daily life for millions.

A fair trial gives the defendant four protections. They hear the exact charge, they get a lawyer, they face a public hearing before an impartial judge, and they count as innocent until proven guilty. Each item blocks a past abuse: secret charges, lonely defendants, hidden trials, and punishment without proof.

Judges must follow the constitution, not politics or popular opinion. That is judicial independence: deciding cases without fear of being punished or fired. In the United States, federal judges hold their posts for life during good behavior, which guards that freedom.

**Example.** Court rulings have ended segregation in public schools and guarded the rights of people accused of crimes. Courts have not always been right, and later courts have overturned unfair rulings. The final word belongs to the law, not to the loudest side.

**Recap.** Fair courts hear both sides freely and measure every act against the law.
