## Ready when they can

- Identify a core ideal in a founding document (e.g., 'all men are created equal' in the Declaration of Independence)
- Explain 'consent of the governed' in their own words (government gets its power from the people)
- Point to a gap between the ideals and reality at the founding (e.g., people who could not vote) and how it narrowed over time

## Lesson: Ideals That Built a Country

The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are the country's founding documents. They do more than set up a government. They also state ideals: liberty, equality, and the idea that government gets its power from the people.

**Example.** The Declaration of Independence says 'all men are created equal.' That is an ideal: no person is born with a greater right to freedom than anyone else. Stating that standard did not make it true right away, but it gave people something to point to when demanding change.

The founders also wrote that governments only have power because the people agree to be governed. That idea is called consent of the governed. In your own words: government works for the people, and if it stops listening to them, it loses its right to rule.

*(drawing: The ideal of equality was stated in 1776, but the right to vote reached more Americans slowly, over generations.)*

**Tip.** When you read a founding document, ask two questions: what ideal does it state, and who was left out of that ideal at the time. Naming the gap is not an insult to the document. It is part of how the country has tried to close that gap ever since.

**Recap.** Founding documents stated ideals like liberty, equality, and consent of the governed, and Americans have spent generations narrowing the gap between those ideals and reality.
