It is the standard measure of an economy's size and a weak measure of life in it, because unpaid work, damage to the environment and how the income is shared all sit outside the total. Only final sales count: the bread counts, the flour sold to the baker does not, since counting both would double count one loaf. Economists split it into consumption, investment, government spending, and net exports to see who bought what. Real GDP strips out price changes so years compare fairly. **Example.** Placing two countries side by side takes more than ranking raw GDP. Divide by population to get GDP per head, which says more about average living standards. Adjust for price gaps too, since a haircut costs far less in one capital than another. Even then the comparison hides inequality, informal work, and what money cannot buy. A richer average can mask a poorer typical citizen. GDP misses plenty that matters. Unpaid care at home, volunteer hours, and leisure never enter the till, while pollution cleanup can perversely raise GDP by paying to fix harm. Nature loss, stress, and inequality stay off the ledger too. A country could log GDP growth while rivers die and free time shrinks. Decisions about health, schooling, or the climate should never rest on GDP alone. **Tip.** End every GDP lesson with humility. GDP ignores distribution, so a boom for the few looks like a boom for all. It ignores sustainability, counting timber sold but not forests thinned. Alternatives like median income, health stats, and happiness surveys fill parts of the gap.
