## Ready when they can

- Explain inflation in their own words and its effect on savings and wages (money buys less than before)
- Interpret a simple chart of unemployment or prices over time and describe the trend
- Identify who is hit hardest by a change (e.g., inflation hurts savers and people on fixed incomes; deflation hurts borrowers)

## Lesson: Inflation, Jobs, and Growth: An Economy's Vital Signs

An economy sends out signals the way a body does. Inflation asks: are prices rising, so will money saved for a bike still buy it next year? Unemployment asks: how many people want a job but can't find one? Growth asks: is the country making more stuff than last year? Each signal tells you something different.

*(drawing: The bar for bread climbs every year. That climb is inflation.)*

**Example.** Ren's grandmother kept $500 in a coffee can for five years. Prices crept up a little each year, so when she opened the can, that same $500 bought fewer groceries than it would have five years earlier. The number on the bill stayed $500. What it could buy shrank. A 10% rise means $50 of food costs $5 more.

Unemployed people have no job but look and can start work. The labour force is people with jobs plus unemployed people. Unemployment rate means unemployed share of labour force. With the same labour force, a lower rate means fewer people. Growth is making more than before and usually means more jobs. A fixed pension stays the same, so fast-rising prices hurt it most. Falling prices hurt borrowers most, since debts are worth more. If the same toys sell $100 then $106 while prices rise 6%, and all made are sold, no more were made.

**Tip.** Rising and falling prices don't treat everyone the same. Fast-rising prices hurt savers and people on a fixed income most, since their money buys less. Falling prices hurt borrowers, since debts get harder to pay off.

**Recap.** Prices, jobs, and output are an economy's vital signs, and every shift in them helps some people while it hurts others.
