# Productivity, Skills and Tools

Why some work produces more: better tools and machines (capital goods) and better-trained people (human capital); how learning a skill raises what a person can earn, and how rising productivity lifts living standards

## Ready when they can

- Explain how a tool raises output (e.g., 'a dishwasher washes more dishes per hour than hands can')
- Connect training to earning (e.g., 'a qualified electrician can charge more than an untrained helper')
- Give an example of investing now to produce more later (e.g., a farmer buying a tractor, a student learning to code)

## Lesson: Tools, training, and getting more done

Some workers get more done in an hour than others. The difference is called productivity: how much a person or a business produces in a set amount of time. Two things raise productivity the most: better tools and machines, and better training.

*(drawing: A dishwasher is a tool. It washes far more dishes in an hour than two hands scrubbing alone.)*

**Example.** Mia's uncle spent three years training to become an electrician. He can now wire a house safely on his own, so he earns more per hour than an untrained helper on the same job. His training raised what people call his human capital, and that raised his pay.

**Tip.** Spending time or money now so you can produce more later is called investing. A farmer who buys a tractor spends money now so she can plant more fields each spring. A student who spends a year learning to code invests time so she can earn more later.

When many workers and machines become more productive, a whole country can make more goods and services without everyone working longer hours. That rising productivity is a big reason living standards improve over time.

**Recap.** Better tools and better training both raise productivity, and investing time or money now can mean earning more later.
