## Ready when they can

- Name things a government provides that families use (e.g., schools, roads, the park, the fire service)
- Explain in simple terms what a government does (makes rules, keeps people safe, helps the community)
- Point out a rule that applies to everyone and say who made it (e.g., 'cars must stop at red lights')

## Lesson: What Is Government?

A government is a group of people who help a whole town or country. They are chosen to take care of everyone. They make rules that everyone must follow.

A government keeps you safe. It builds roads, schools, and parks for your family to use. It also pays for firefighters and libraries full of books.

**Example.** Mia walks to school on a safe street. After school, she plays at the park. If there is ever a fire, firefighters help fast. All of this comes from the government.

*(drawing: The government helps Mia all day long: a safe street in the morning, the park after school, and firefighters ready to help.)*

**Tip.** Look at a stop sign near your home. It says cars must stop there. The government made that rule to keep everyone safe.

**Recap.** A government makes rules, keeps everyone safe, and gives families schools, roads, parks, and firefighters.
