## Ready when they can

- Explain what a deepfake is and distinguish it from another example of AI-generated content
- Describe two checks for suspicious content and explain why an odd detail alone is not proof of AI generation
- Explain how realistic fabricated content can mislead people and why checking before sharing matters

## Lesson: Deepfakes and AI-Generated Content

You have learned that AI can make mistakes. It can also generate pictures, writing, video and sound. A deepfake uses AI to create or alter media so someone or something appears to do or say something that did not happen. An AI-written poem is generated content, but it need not imitate a person or pretend to record a real event.

**Example.** Imagine a video makes a singer appear to announce a concert they never announced. AI can imitate a person's appearance or voice using examples. Different tools work in different ways. Some results have visible mistakes; others look and sound convincing. A realistic appearance cannot prove that the singer made the announcement.

Odd shadows, distorted objects or mismatched mouth movements are reasons to check further. They do not prove AI use: editing or recording problems can also cause odd details. A picture without odd details can still be fabricated. Stiff or repeated wording does not reliably identify whether a person or AI wrote a text.

Fabricated media can mislead people about events. Find the original post or full recording and compare reliable reports. Reposts may copy one source, so repetition is not confirmation. If the evidence is unclear, do not share the claim as fact. Ask a trusted adult for help. AI-made scenes can also be used openly as fiction in films.

**Recap.** Realistic content can be fabricated. Odd details are reasons to investigate, not proof. Check origins and evidence before sharing a claim.
