# Searching and Evaluating Online

Search the web effectively and judge what comes back: choose precise search words, understand that results are selected and ranked by a program rather than checked by a person, and weigh whether a page is trustworthy and relevant

## Ready when they can

- Refine a search by changing keywords when the first results aren't useful (e.g., 'Saturn rings facts' instead of 'space')
- Explain that search results are ranked by a program and that the top result is not automatically the best or truest
- Check who wrote a page and compare it with a second source before believing a surprising claim

## Lesson: Searching and Evaluating Online

When you search online, you type a few words and a program looks through billions of pages for matches. A broad search like 'space' brings back too many results, and most won't help with your topic. Try more exact words instead, like 'Saturn rings facts'.

*(drawing: Trade a broad search for exact words that match what you actually need.)*

No person checks each page before it shows up in your results. A program ranks them using rules, like how closely the words match. That means the very first result is not automatically the best one, or the truest one.

**Example.** Omar searches 'do goldfish sleep' and the top result says goldfish never sleep at all. Before repeating that, he checks who wrote the page and reads one more source. Most sources agree goldfish do rest, just with their eyes open.

**Tip.** Before you trust a surprising fact, check who wrote the page and read a second source. If they disagree, keep looking.

**Recap.** Pick exact search words, remember a program ranks the results, and check who wrote a surprising claim before you believe it.
