# Using an AI Tool on Schoolwork Without Cheating Yourself

An AI tool can draft, explain or check, and each of those changes what the learner ends up knowing. Deciding in advance which part of the work is yours, and saying what the tool did, is what keeps the help honest.

## Ready when they can

- Name a use that helps learning and one that replaces it, for the same piece of work
- State before starting which part of a task will be done without the tool, and hold to it
- Write one line saying what the tool was used for, in a form a teacher could check

## Lesson: Use the tool, keep the learning

An AI tool can draft, explain or check, and each choice changes what you end up knowing. A draft written for you teaches far less than a draft you wrestled with yourself.

**Example.** Asking the tool to explain a worked example helps learning, since the thinking stays yours. Pasting in the whole essay question and handing in the answer replaces learning, since the thinking left with the tool.

Before you start, state which part of the task stays tool-free and hold to it. Writing the line first makes it a promise instead of a mood.

**Tip.** Finish with one honest line a teacher could check, naming what the tool did. If you cannot write that line, the tool did too much.

**Recap.** Decide in advance which part is yours, hold the line, and disclose what the tool did.
