# Voice Assistants and How They Work

How voice-assistant software handles spoken requests. A simple model follows listening, working out a request, finding an answer and speaking. Assistants can mishear, misinterpret requests or give mistaken answers. They are programs, not people with human feelings.

## Ready when they can

- Describe a simple spoken-answer model: listen, work out the request, find an answer and speak
- Give an example of a voice-assistant mistake and a possible explanation
- Explain that a voice assistant is software, not a person with human feelings

## Lesson: Voice Assistants and How They Work

A smart speaker can use voice-assistant software to respond to you. Alexa and Siri are examples. For a spoken answer, we can use this model: listen, work out the request, find an answer, then speak. Other tasks, such as playing music, can need a different response.

*(drawing: This model gives an order for a spoken answer. It leaves out many details inside the software.)*

**Example.** Ben asks for a joke, but music plays. The reply does not match. The assistant may have misheard or worked out the request incorrectly. It can also use mistaken information when answering. Speaking an answer does not prove it is true.

A voice assistant is a computer program. No person is hiding inside the speaker. Its software processes words, but it does not understand or feel like a person. Saying 'I'm happy' does not give it human feelings.

Quiet speech or background noise can make words hard to pick up. Saying the request clearly again may help. An unexpected reply can have different causes. The reply alone does not tell us exactly what happened.

**Recap.** Voice assistants use software to handle requests. They can make mistakes. Spoken words do not prove truth or human feelings.
