## Ready when they can

- Name several inventions or designers and the problem each design solved (e.g. the printing press making books cheap enough for many people)
- Describe how one invention changed daily life (e.g. how washing machines changed household work)
- Explain that designs improve over time as people spot problems (e.g. early cars vs modern ones)

## Lesson: Design That Changed the World

Every invention starts with a problem someone wants to solve. Long ago, copying one book by hand took months, so books were rare and expensive. Johannes Gutenberg built a printing press that could copy pages fast. Suddenly, many people could own a book.

*(drawing: Bicycles changed step by step, from a wobbly big wheel to a safer ride with brakes.)*

**Example.** Alexander Graham Bell wanted people to hear real voices over a wire, not just telegraph clicks. In 1876 he built the telephone. Before it, sending news meant writing a letter and waiting days. After it, people could talk to someone far away in seconds.

Washing clothes used to mean scrubbing them by hand for hours. When washing machines were invented, that same job took minutes instead. That gave families more time for other things.

**Tip.** Designs keep changing because people spot new problems. Early cars had no seatbelts and broke down often. Modern cars are safer because designers kept fixing what was missing.

**Recap.** Every design starts by solving a real problem, and it keeps getting better as people notice what still needs fixing.
