# Drawing a Design So Someone Else Can Build It

A design drawing is not a picture, it is an instruction. Views from more than one side, real dimensions and a stated scale are what let someone else make the thing without asking.

## Ready when they can

- Draw an object from front, side and above and label which view is which
- Put dimensions on a drawing with units, and state the scale used
- Say what an exploded view shows that a single outside view cannot
- Look at someone else's drawing and name the one thing missing that would stop you building it

## Lesson: Draw it so someone else can build it

A design drawing is not a picture. It is a set of instructions. It must let a builder make the thing without asking you a single question.

**Example.** A plan for a wooden jump box lists one sheet of plywood, 8 feet by 4 feet. It gives 6 rectangles in 3 sizes, each written with units. Anyone who reads the plan can build the same box, even a stranger far away.

Show the thing from more than one side: front, side and above, and label each view. Put every real size on the drawing with its unit, like cm. State the scale, since the real thing could never fit on paper.

**Tip.** An exploded view pulls the parts apart on paper. A single outside view hides how parts fit, but the exploded view shows it. Before you finish, hand your drawing to a friend and ask what is missing.

**Recap.** Label your views, write every size with units, state the scale, and a stranger can build your design.
