# Using Tools Safely

Choose and use tools and equipment for cutting, shaping, joining and finishing (scissors, hole punches, saws, sandpaper, glue): match the tool to the material and the job, and explain the safety rules for each

## Ready when they can

- Pick a sensible tool for a job and say why (e.g. a junior hacksaw for a wooden dowel, scissors for card)
- Describe the safety rules for a tool before using it (e.g. cutting away from fingers, clamping wood first)
- Name ways of joining and finishing materials and when each works best (e.g. glue vs tape vs split pins)

## Lesson: Using Tools Safely

Every job needs the right tool. Scissors cut paper and card. A hacksaw cuts wood. Sandpaper smooths rough edges.

*(drawing: Follow these four steps every time.)*

**Example.** Ben wants to cut a wooden dowel. He picks a junior hacksaw, not scissors. He clamps the wood first. He cuts slowly, away from his fingers.

**Tip.** Always ask a grown-up before using a saw or glue gun. Cut away from your fingers, never towards them.

Glue joins paper and card well. Tape holds things for a short time. A split pin lets parts turn. Sandpaper finishes wood so it feels smooth.

**Recap.** Match the tool to the job, learn its safety rule, then pick the best way to join or finish it.
