# Advanced Collaborative Discussions

Take part in demanding group discussions: arrive prepared with evidence from reading or research, follow agreed rules and roles, pose questions that connect several speakers' ideas, and qualify or justify views when new evidence emerges

## Ready when they can

- Bring notes or evidence from reading into a discussion and refer to them when making a point
- Ask a question that links what two earlier speakers said (e.g. 'Maya's point about cost seems to clash with Leo's — can both be right?')
- Adjust or defend a position when someone presents new evidence, explaining the reasoning aloud

## Lesson: Linking ideas in a group discussion

Think of the best class discussion you've had, the kind where ideas kept building instead of everyone waiting for a turn to talk. A demanding discussion asks that of you every time. You come prepared with evidence from your reading, you follow the group's agreed rules and roles, and you actively connect what other people say. A strong discussion partner listens, links, and builds. The goal is not to win the argument. It is to leave the room understanding more than when you walked in.

*(drawing: The three moves of a strong discussion partner: come prepared, link two people's ideas, and say if your view shifts.)*

**Example.** During a debate about school lunches, Jordan says: "Priya's point about cost seems to clash with what Sam said about fresh food. Can a lunch really be cheap and fresh at the same time?" Jordan is not repeating either point. Jordan is linking them into a new question.

Linking moves a discussion on. Connect two speakers: "Your cost point clashes with hers on quality." Build on one: "Adding to Sam, the survey also shows..." Or challenge: "I see it differently, because the article says..." Name who you answer so the group can follow.

Sometimes someone shares evidence that challenges what you believe. A strong discussion partner does not ignore it or repeat the same point louder. They think out loud: "That changes things, because..." or "I still think this, but only if..." Explaining your reasoning, even when you keep your view, shows you actually weighed the new evidence.

**Tip.** Before a discussion, jot down two or three pieces of evidence from your reading. Having them on paper means you can point to them instead of guessing from memory.

**Recap.** Bring your evidence, connect what others say, and be ready to explain if your view shifts. That is what turns a chat into a real discussion.
