# Analysing Structural Choices in Whole Texts

Read structure as a sequence of decisions: where a text starts, how its focus narrows or widens, where the perspective moves, and what the ending does with the opening. Position carries meaning independently of content.

- Describe how the focus of an extract moves from wide to narrow and what the move does
- Explain the effect of where a moment sits (first line, midpoint, last line), not what it contains
- Link an ending back to the opening and say what the return changes

## Lesson: Follow how the text is built

Read structure as a set of decisions about order. The same blocks can stack into a tower, a castle, or a train, and each shape means something new. Ask where the text starts, where its focus moves, and where each key detail lands.

**Example.** A sonnet packs thought into fourteen lines, free verse drops rhyme and set length, and a villanelle repeats set lines across five tercets plus a quatrain. Each shape pushes the reader differently. In plays a soliloquy speaks to the self or audience, while a monologue speaks to other characters. Name the shape, then say what the shape does.

Track whether the focus stays close to one moment or pulls back to something bigger. A detail saved for the last line lands harder than the same detail buried mid-page. Position carries meaning on its own, apart from content.

**Tip.** Build a says and does outline: for each paragraph note what it says, then what it does for the whole argument. Link the ending back to the opening and say what the return changes. If the close echoes the start, that echo is doing work.
