## Ready when they can

- Explain how a non-chronological structure (e.g., flashback, frame narrative) creates suspense or surprise
- Analyse the role of a specific paragraph in developing and refining a key concept in a non-fiction text
- Compare how two texts use different structures (e.g., epistolary vs. linear narrative) and the effect of each

## Lesson: How a Text's Structure Shapes Meaning

A text's structure is the way its parts are put together: chapters in a novel, stanzas in a poem, scenes in a play, or paragraphs in an essay. Structure is not just organization. It shapes how ideas build, how tension rises, and how meaning comes together by the final line.

Most stories move in chronological order, from the earliest event to the latest. But a writer can break that order on purpose. A flashback jumps backward to an earlier moment, often to explain a mystery or build suspense right when you need it most. A frame narrative goes further: it wraps one story inside another, like a character telling a tale within the main story you are reading.

*(drawing: The story opens in the present, jumps back to reveal the past, then returns to now. That backward jump is the flashback, placed right where it does the most work.)*

**Example.** In a nonfiction article about ocean plastic, the first paragraph might state the claim: plastic is filling the oceans. The next paragraph gives evidence, like a statistic on waste. A third paragraph might raise a counterargument, such as 'recycling already solves this,' before answering it. Each paragraph has a job: state the idea, support it, complicate it, then strengthen it. Trace what each paragraph does, and you can see the argument being built one block at a time.

**Tip.** When you compare two texts, ask what their structure lets them do that another structure could not. An epistolary text, told through letters or diary entries, gives you one character's private thoughts at a time. A linear narrative, told straight through, can move faster and show more happening at once. Same event, different structure, different effect on the reader.

**Recap.** Structure, whether it jumps in time, nests a story within a story, or unfolds through letters, is a deliberate choice that shapes what a text means.
