## Ready when they can

- Generate synonyms and antonyms for given words and explain subtle differences between synonyms, e.g. happy/joyful/ecstatic differ in intensity
- Use a thesaurus to find synonyms and select the most precise word for a given context, e.g. choosing 'sprinted' rather than 'ran' to convey speed
- Replace overused words in writing with more precise synonyms and explain how the substitution changes the tone or emphasis

## Lesson: Antonyms and synonyms

A synonym is a word that means almost the same thing as another word. Happy and glad are synonyms. They both describe feeling good, and you can swap one for the other without changing the sentence much. Stronger synonyms feel bigger. Ecstatic is a much stronger glad.

An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word. Hot and cold are antonyms. If you swap one for the other, the sentence ends up meaning something completely different.

*(drawing: Sprinted is a synonym for ran, but it tells the reader the person moved very fast.)*

**Example.** Ana is writing a spy story. She writes, 'The spy said the plan quietly.' She looks up said in a thesaurus and finds whispered. She changes the sentence to 'The spy whispered the plan.' Now the reader can feel how careful and secret the spy is being.

**Tip.** Before you swap in a new word, check that it still fits your meaning. Swapping in an antonym by mistake flips your sentence's meaning instead of sharpening it.

**Recap.** Synonyms mean almost the same thing, antonyms mean the opposite, and picking the most precise synonym makes your writing clearer.
