## Ready when they can

- Spell subject-specific vocabulary correctly when encountered in new domains (e.g., 'parliament', 'photosynthesis', 'algorithm')
- Apply known spelling rules and etymological patterns to unfamiliar words
- Use proofreading strategies to identify and correct spelling errors in own extended writing

## Lesson: Applying Spelling Rules to Complex Words

In secondary school you meet longer, trickier words in every subject: parliament in history, photosynthesis in science, algorithm in computing. These words often come from Greek, French, or Latin, and the spelling rules you already know still apply. You just need to spot the pattern.

*(drawing: Photosynthesis breaks into two Greek parts: photo (light) and synthesis (putting together). Spell each part correctly and you spell the whole word.)*

**Example.** Zara kept mixing up 'seperate' and 'separate' in her essays. Then she noticed 'separate' has a hidden word inside it: sep-a-RAT-e. Now she never misspells it.

**Tip.** When you meet a new subject word, break it into parts, say each part aloud, and check it against a pattern you already know. Keep a short list of tricky words for each subject.

**Recap.** Long words follow the same rules you already know. Break them into parts, then proofread.
