## Ready when they can

- Ask follow-up questions that build on another speaker's comment
- Respond to a classmate's idea by adding supporting evidence or a related example
- Redirect a discussion by posing a question that connects to the main topic

## Lesson: Building on What Others Say

You know that discussion where everyone just waits for a turn and nobody really listens? A good discussion is different: you listen closely to what someone else says, then add to it. That's called building on an idea.

*(drawing: Each turn connects to the one before it, like links in a chain.)*

**Example.** During a book discussion, Jake says the main character was brave. Priya builds on this by saying, 'That's true, and she was also brave when she stood up to her sister in chapter three.' Priya's comment gives a specific example that supports Jake's idea.

Try starting with a phrase like 'That reminds me...' or 'Can you say more about...' These phrases show you were listening and want to add something new, not just repeat what was said. If talk drifts, ask how it links to the main topic.

**Recap.** Listen first, then ask a question or add an example that connects to what was just said.
