# Building sentences

Understand that words combine to make sentences — a sentence expresses a complete thought; produce and expand complete sentences in speech and writing

Subject: English · Area: Grammar & Punctuation · Ages 4 to 6

## Ready when they can

- Distinguish between complete sentences and fragments
- Compose a complete sentence with a subject and verb
- Expand a simple sentence by adding detail

## Lesson: Building sentences

A sentence tells a whole idea so a friend knows what you mean. It names someone or something, then tells what they do.

*(drawing: The dog is the subject. Ran is the verb. Together, a full sentence.)*

**Example.** Mia says, 'The cat.' That does not tell what happened. She adds words: 'The cat slept.' Now it is complete.

You can always add more words to tell more. 'The cat slept on the mat.' Still one sentence.

**Recap.** A sentence names who or what, then tells what happened. You can always add more detail.
