# Building Writing Stamina

Write about real events and for different purposes, developing stamina for sustained writing across genres beyond narrative (e.g., recounts, letters, instructions)

Subject: English · Area: Writing Composition · Ages 6 to 7

## Ready when they can

- Write a recount of a school trip using temporal connectives (first, then, after that)
- Write a simple set of instructions with numbered steps
- Sustain writing for an extended period across a full page without stopping

## Lesson: Writing for Different Reasons

You already know how to write a story with a beginning and an ending. Writing can do other jobs too. You can write a recount of something that really happened, a letter to a friend, or instructions for a game. Each kind of writing has its own job to do.

**Example.** Mia went on a school trip to the zoo. She wrote: First, we got on the bus. Then, we saw the lions. After that, we ate our lunch. Finally, we went home. The order words show what happened first, next, and last.

*(drawing: Order words like these help your reader follow what happened.)*

**Example.** Dan wrote instructions for his favorite game. He wrote: 1. Roll the dice. 2. Move your piece. 3. Wait for your turn. Numbered steps tell the reader exactly what to do, one at a time.

**Tip.** Writing for a long time can feel hard on your hand. If you get tired, take a breath and keep going. Try to fill the whole page before you stop.

**Recap.** Writing has different jobs: order words help a recount, numbered steps help instructions, and stamina helps you finish the page.
