## Ready when they can

- Determine the audience (e.g., peers, teacher, younger children, a public audience) and purpose (to persuade, inform, entertain, or explain) before drafting and explain how these choices affect language and structure
- Select an appropriate form for the writing task (letter, report, story, instructions, review) based on audience and purpose
- Adjust vocabulary, sentence length, and level of formality to suit the identified audience, e.g. using simpler language for younger readers and more formal language for an official letter

## Lesson: Who Are You Writing For?

Before you write anything, think about two things: who will read it, and why you are writing it. A letter to your grandma and a letter to your school principal might ask for the exact same thing, but they should not sound the same.

Your audience changes your words. Writing for a younger child? Use short sentences and simple words. Writing for a teacher or an official letter? Use fuller sentences and more formal words. Your purpose matters too. To persuade someone, you might write a letter or a review. To explain how something works, you might write instructions or a report.

*(drawing: The same message can sound casual for a friend or very formal for a principal. Your reader sets the tone.)*

**Example.** Maya loved a book and wants her whole class to read it, so she writes a book review with a friendly, excited tone. Later she writes to the school librarian asking for more copies. That letter uses polite, formal words instead, because her audience and purpose changed.

**Tip.** Before you write a single word, ask yourself: who is going to read this, and why am I writing it? Your answer decides your form, your tone, and even your words.

**Recap.** Pick your form and tone by asking who will read your writing and why, then match your words to fit them.
