# Cohesion and Transitions Across Writing

## Ready when they can

- Use a range of causal and logical connectives (consequently, nevertheless, as a result) appropriately across a discursive essay
- Signal a shift in time or setting within a narrative using a transitional phrase or paragraph break
- Link paragraphs using a cohesive device such as a topic sentence that refers back to the previous paragraph

## Lesson: Connecting your paragraphs from start to finish

You already know how to link sentences inside one paragraph and how to connect one paragraph to the next with an adverbial. Now you'll use those same instincts across a whole essay or story. Every time your writing moves to a new idea, a new argument, or a new moment in time, give your reader a clear signal so they can follow the shift without getting lost.

*(drawing: Notice how 'however' and 'as a result' link each paragraph to the one before it.)*

**Example.** In a discursive essay, connectives carry your argument from paragraph to paragraph. One paragraph might end by explaining that shorter lunch breaks save time. The next could open with 'Consequently, students finish their school day earlier.' A paragraph that pushes back might open with 'Nevertheless, some students say they no longer have time to eat properly.' Each connective tells the reader whether the new idea agrees with, results from, or challenges the one before it.

**Example.** In a story, a transitional phrase can move the reader through time or across a setting without any confusion. 'Three days later, the letter finally arrived.' 'Meanwhile, back at the farmhouse, Grandpa searched every drawer.' Sometimes a paragraph break alone does the job, especially when the new paragraph opens with a word about time or place.

To link two paragraphs smoothly, open the new one by referring back to the idea in the paragraph before it, then add your new point. For example: 'This risk is real, but the benefits matter just as much.' One sentence like that ties both paragraphs together.

**Recap.** Good transitions guide your reader through shifts in time, place, and argument, so the whole piece reads as one connected journey instead of separate islands.
