# Comparing Texts Across Media

Compare a written text with its audio, video or multimedia version, analysing how each medium portrays the subject; weigh the advantages and disadvantages of different mediums for presenting a particular topic or idea

Subject: English · Area: Reading Comprehension · Ages 12 to 14

## Ready when they can

- Compare a speech's written text with a recording of it, noting how delivery changes the impact (e.g. pauses adding urgency)
- Explain what a video version of a text adds or loses compared with the print version
- Recommend the best medium for presenting a topic and justify the choice (e.g. a diagram-rich webpage over a podcast for explaining an engine)

## Lesson: The Same Story, Told Differently

You already know how to summarize a talk or video in your own words. The same words can feel completely different depending on how you take them in. A speech on the page and that same speech in a recording carry identical words, but not the same impact. Count what each medium carries: print gives you one layer, the words; a recording adds a second, the voice; a video adds a third, the pictures.

**Example.** Zara reads a printed copy of a speech for class. Later she watches a video of the same speech. In the video, the speaker pauses just before the biggest promise, and the crowd cheers right after. On the page, that pause is invisible, so the promise reads like just another sentence.

*(drawing: Count the layers each medium carries: print has 1 (the words), a recording has 2 (words plus tone and pauses), and a video has 3 (words, images and sound).)*

A video version can add music, facial expressions, and pacing that a written text cannot show on its own. But video plays in order at its own pace, so finding a tricky part again takes more work than pointing back to a sentence on a page.

Before picking a medium, ask what the topic actually needs. A topic full of steps and diagrams, like fixing a bike chain, is usually clearer on a webpage with pictures than in a podcast that only uses sound.

Popular is not the same as fitting. A medium can be everyone's favorite and still leave out what the topic is made of, so check the fit first. When the topic is mostly sound, like birdsong or an accent, audio is the fit, and a podcast does a job a page of photos cannot.

**Recap.** The medium shapes the message: reading, watching and listening each bring out different parts of the same text.
