# Comparing Writers' Viewpoints Across Non-Fiction

Compare two non-fiction texts on one subject, often written a century apart: what each writer thinks, how each makes a reader feel it, and where their methods diverge.

## Lesson: Comparing two non-fiction writers

Start by naming each writer's attitude in a phrase, not just their shared subject. Two writers can cover factory work or city life yet sound wholly different, so try tags like quietly furious or gently amused before you compare.

Compare methods, not only opinions. Ask who each writer is, whom they address, and what they want from that audience. Then set anecdote against statistic, and mockery against restraint.

**Example.** Build one comparative point on two extracts. Place one sentence from each text side by side: a personal story that pulls at feeling against facts and numbers that argue with logic. Name which strategy each writer favours.

**Tip.** Support every comparative claim with quoted proof from both texts. A vague contrast with no extracts is only an opinion about opinions, so keep one extract from each side for each point.

**Recap.** Name each attitude in a phrase, set method against method, and prove each point twice.
