## Ready when they can

- Distinguish between a story, a poem, and a non-fiction book
- Point to and name the author and illustrator on the cover
- Explain that the author writes the words and the illustrator makes the pictures

## Lesson: Story, Poem, or Fact Book?

Books are not all the same. Some tell a made-up story. Some use rhyming words. Some tell true facts.

**Example.** Mia reads a book about a talking cat. It is made up. That book is a story.

Not every text is a book. A list names things, like the food you need. A sign uses a few words to tell everyone what to do. A note is a short message for one person. A recipe tells you how to make food, step by step.

*(drawing: The cover shows the title, the author, and the illustrator.)*

The author writes the words in the book. The illustrator draws the pictures we see.

**Tip.** Look at the cover. You will see the author's name and the illustrator's name.

**Recap.** Stories, poems, and fact books are different. Lists, signs, notes, and recipes are texts too. The author writes words. The illustrator draws pictures.
