## Ready when they can

- Identify whether a story uses first-person or third-person narration and explain the effect
- Explain how events would be described differently if told from another character's perspective
- Analyse how the narrator's knowledge or bias affects what information the reader receives

## Lesson: Whose eyes are we seeing through?

You already know a narrator can speak as 'I' or tell the story using 'he' and 'she'. Now here's a bigger question: how much does that narrator actually know? Some narrators only know what one character sees, hears, and feels. Others know everything that happens everywhere, even inside every character's head.

A narrator who knows only one character's side is called a limited narrator. A narrator who knows everything, including every character's thoughts, is called an omniscient narrator. That word means all-knowing.

**Example.** Two kids get into an argument at recess. If a limited narrator tells the story through Mia's eyes, you only learn what Mia thinks, and you might believe she was right. If an omniscient narrator tells it, you hear both Mia's thoughts and Jake's thoughts, so you understand why Jake acted that way too.

*(drawing: In the recess story, a limited narrator opens 1 mind, Mia's. An omniscient narrator opens 2, Mia's and Jake's.)*

**Tip.** To spot a limited narrator, look for what the story leaves out. If you never learn what a character nearby is thinking, the narrator's view is probably limited to just one person.

**Example.** Watch for narrators who seem to have an opinion. A narrator who keeps calling a character 'sneaky' without showing any proof is letting bias slip into the story, and that shapes what you believe before you even meet the character yourself.

Writers pick a narrator on purpose, the way a filmmaker picks a camera. A limited narrator keeps the reader close to one character, so secrets can stay hidden until that character finds them out. An omniscient narrator can visit many minds, so the reader understands everyone's side at once. When you read, it helps to ask: why did the writer want us to see the story this way?

**Recap.** The same events can feel completely different depending on whose eyes, and whose knowledge, the story is told through.
