# Editing for Effect

Redraft to change how a piece lands, not only to correct it: read it aloud, cut what stalls, and ask whether the effect intended is the effect produced.

## Ready when they can

- Read a draft aloud and mark every place the reading stumbles
- Make one structural change in a redraft, such as moving or deleting a paragraph
- Name the effect intended and point to where the draft fails to produce it

## Lesson: Redrafting so writing lands

Read your draft aloud, or have your device read it to you. Your ear catches what your eyes skip: sentences that trail off, ideas that repeat, and every spot where you stumble over the words.

Mark each trip-up and fix it for effect, not just correctness. Cut a word, move a phrase, or rewrite an ending, then read the passage aloud again and check it feels right.

Make one structural change in the redraft, such as moving or deleting a paragraph. Small shifts redirect whole pieces: sliding only to a new spot in a sentence remakes what the sentence means.

**Tip.** Name the effect you intended and point to where the draft fails to produce it. Check tense too: verbs that drift between past and present break the spell without your meaning it.
