# Forms of Poetry and Performance

Recognise different forms of poetry (free verse, narrative poetry, haiku) and discuss their features; prepare poems and play scripts to read aloud and perform with understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action

## Ready when they can

- Name at least two different forms of poetry and describe a feature of each (e.g., 'narrative poetry tells a story', 'free verse does not have a regular rhyme or rhythm')
- Recognise the form of a given poem and explain how you identified it (e.g., 'This is a narrative poem because it has characters and a plot')
- Prepare and perform a poem or play script extract showing understanding through changes in intonation, volume, and expression

## Lesson: Poems come in different forms

Poems don't all look and sound the same. A narrative poem tells a story, with characters and things that happen. Free verse doesn't follow a regular rhyme or beat; it flows more like natural speech. A haiku is a short poem with three lines and a set number of syllables in each line.

*(drawing: A haiku always follows this pattern: 5 syllables, then 7, then 5.)*

**Example.** Read this: 'Once there lived a fox who lost his way home, and a kind owl showed him the path back.' It has a character (the fox) and tells what happens to him, so it's a narrative poem, not a haiku or free verse.

Some poems rhyme. Rhyming words end with the same sound, like song and long, and the rhyme usually lands on the last word of a line. Some poems also have a steady beat, so the words fall into an even pattern, like a clap keeping time. Rhyme and beat are features, not forms. A narrative poem may rhyme or not, a haiku counts syllables instead, and free verse leaves both out.

When you perform a poem or a play script, let your voice match the feeling. Go a bit faster and brighter for excitement, slower and softer for sadness, and pause where the words need room to land. Commas and full stops are good places to pause. In a play script, give each character their own voice so listeners can tell them apart. Look up at your listeners sometimes, and even in a gentle part, speak clearly enough to reach the back of the room.

**Tip.** Before you perform, read the poem once quietly to yourself. That helps you find the feeling and the spots where a pause fits.

**Recap.** Poems come in forms like narrative, free verse, and haiku, and performing them well means matching your voice to the mood.
