# Group discussions

Participate actively in collaborative conversations staying on topic; continue a conversation through multiple exchanges; maintain attention in discussions

Subject: English · Area: Speaking & Listening · Ages 4 to 11
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/english/group-discussions-mt_wwdRhPyz6s

## Ready when they can

- Stay on topic during a conversation for multiple turns
- Build on what another speaker has said (e.g. 'I agree because...')
- Maintain focus and contribute meaningfully in group discussions

## Lesson: Talking in a group

In a group chat, everyone gets a turn to talk. You listen when it is not your turn. You speak when it is your turn. Stay on the same topic as your friends.

*(drawing: Take turns like this: listen, then talk, then listen again.)*

**Example.** Zoe says, 'I like dogs.' Sam says, 'I agree, dogs are fun.' Sam stayed on topic and added his own idea.

**Tip.** When a friend talks, really listen to them. Then say something that builds on their idea. Try starting with 'I agree because...' or 'That reminds me of...'

**Recap.** Listen well, stay on topic, and build on what others say.
