## Ready when they can

- Map the structure of a novel showing how each chapter advances plot or character development
- Explain how individual stanzas in a poem build toward a central theme or message
- Analyse how scenes in a play work together to develop conflict and resolution

## Lesson: How the Parts Build the Whole

A novel is built from chapters. A play is built from scenes. A poem is built from stanzas. On its own, each part is just one piece. Together, they build the whole story, drama, or poem.

*(drawing: Chapter 1 plants a clue. Chapter 5 finally uses it.)*

**Example.** In one adventure novel, chapter 1 shows a boy losing his grandfather's compass. Chapters 2 through 8 barely mention it. Then in chapter 9, the boy finds the compass again, and it helps him find his way home. Chapter 1 was quietly doing its job the whole time.

**Tip.** After you finish a chapter, scene, or stanza, pause and ask: what job did this part just do? Did it start a question, build tension, or answer something from earlier?

Not every part does the same job. One part might start a question. Another might build tension, making the problem feel bigger and bigger. A later part might answer something from earlier. The order matters too: tension usually grows before it fades. When you can name each part's job, the whole text makes more sense.

**Recap.** Every chapter, scene, or stanza does its own job, and together those jobs build the whole text.
