## Ready when they can

- Demonstrate attentive listening by giving a relevant reply or asking about what was said
- Follow classroom discussion rules (e.g. raise hand, wait for turn)
- Show understanding of what was said by paraphrasing or responding appropriately

## Lesson: Listening and responding

Listen to what the person says. Give them time to finish. You can listen without looking into their eyes. If something distracts you, move it aside.

*(drawing: If your class uses this rule, raise your hand and wait to be invited to speak.)*

Answer the question you heard. If someone asks your favourite fruit, name a fruit you like. If you missed the question, ask to hear it again.

**Example.** Dad says, 'Put your books on the shelf.' Jo replies, 'My books go on the shelf.' Jo says the instruction in her own words.

Ask about the same topic. If a friend tells you about a pet, ask about the pet. A question about something else does not show what you understood.

A nod can show that you heard someone. A nod alone does not tell them what you understood. A reply about their words gives them more information.

Take turns in a group. Follow the group's agreed rule so others can speak too. If you need urgent help, tell an adult.

**Recap.** Listen to the words, answer about them, and follow your group's turn-taking rule.
