- Ask for clarification when something in a read-aloud is not understood

## Lesson: Listening and Answering Questions

Sometimes a grown-up reads a book out loud to you. The book might be too hard to read alone. Listen closely so you can talk about it after.

Some read-alouds are stories. Some tell you true things. Both need the same thing from you. Real listening happens inside your head, so eyes on the reader are not enough. Put other things down and keep your mind on the words. If a noise pulls you away, bring your mind back to the reading.

**Example.** The teacher reads a story about a lost puppy. She asks: who was in the story? Where did it happen? What was the problem? Mia listens closely and answers every question.

*(drawing: Think about the story in order: beginning, middle, end.)*

While you listen, make a picture in your head. Picture who is there, where they are, and what they do. When the words change, change your picture too. A picture you built yourself is easier to remember than words on their own.

Sometimes a word is new to you. Hold that word in your head and ask what it means when the reader stops. Putting your hand up works too. One new word can hide the meaning of the next part, so it is always worth asking.

If a part of the reading goes past you, ask about it as soon as you can. It might be a word you did not know, or a whole moment you missed while your mind wandered. Either way, one missing piece can hide everything that comes after it, so asking early saves the rest of the story. Nobody minds the question.

**Recap.** Listen closely, then ask and answer questions about the story.
