## Ready when they can

- Use terms like 'subordinate clause', 'relative pronoun', 'metaphor', 'alliteration' accurately in discussion
- Explain the difference between a simile and a metaphor using correct terminology
- Use metalanguage (e.g., 'the author employs enjambment to...') confidently when writing about texts

## Lesson: The Language for Talking About Language

When you talk about a book or a poem, exact words help you say precisely what you mean. Instead of saying 'this bit is good,' you can name the exact trick the writer used and explain what it does.

**Example.** Two ways to describe a storm: 'The storm roared like an angry giant' is a simile, because it compares using 'like'. 'The storm was an angry giant' is a metaphor, because it says the storm IS the giant, with no comparing word.

*(drawing: Spot the comparing word. When 'like' or 'as' shows up, you have a simile. When one thing just IS another, with no comparing word, you have a metaphor.)*

Alliteration repeats a starting sound, as in 'the wild wind wailed.' Personification gives a human quality to something that is not human, as in 'the wind whispered.'

In poetry, enjambment happens when a sentence runs past the end of one line into the next, with no pause. It can make a poem feel like it is rushing forward.

**Tip.** You already know terms like subordinate clause and relative pronoun. Combine them with new terms like metaphor and enjambment, so instead of 'this bit sounds good,' you can say 'this subordinate clause slows the pace, and the metaphor makes the storm feel alive.'

**Recap.** Naming the exact device, like metaphor, alliteration, or enjambment, turns a vague opinion into a precise, confident comment about a text.
