## Lesson: Catching yourself when you're lost

Decoding means using letters and their sounds to work out a written word. You can do this silently or aloud. Comprehension means understanding what the words say. Working out the words does not by itself show that you understand the message. After reading a part, pause to check its meaning. Check easy parts too. This habit also helps when you listen.

*(drawing: Ask yourself: did that make sense to me?)*

Retell a part in your own words and compare it with the text. If the retelling changes a number, correct it. Leave out reasons the text does not give. Or choose a matching picture: check the action and place. Understanding and remembering a whole story are different. If one check is hard, try another or ask for help. One hard check does not prove you missed the meaning.

**Example.** Ben reads a paragraph about how bees make honey. He says every word correctly, but he is unsure what the paragraph means. Ben rereads it slowly and checks again. This time, he can explain the main idea.

*(drawing: A reread may help. Check again to see whether it helped you.)*

When a part does not make sense, stop and reread it slowly. You can ask what a tricky word means or ask for help with the confusing part. If you are listening, ask to hear that part again. Then check the meaning again. If you are still unsure, try another check or ask for more help.

You may understand one part and be unsure about another. You might know where something happened but want to check why. Check the part you are unsure about. Checking an earlier event can help you follow a later event that depends on it.

**Recap.** Reading or hearing words does not by itself show that you understood their meaning. Check the meaning, and try another check or ask for help if you are unsure.
