## Ready when they can

- Retell a fable and identify the moral, citing three key details that convey it
- Compare how two myths from different cultures convey a similar central message through different events
- Explain the difference between the topic of a story and its central message or lesson

## Lesson: Finding the Message in a Story

Fables, folktales, and myths are different kinds of stories from around the world. A fable often uses animals to teach a lesson. A folktale is passed down in a community. A myth explains something bigger, like why the sun rises. All three can carry a central message, a lesson the story wants you to notice.

Each kind of story has its own marks. A fable is short, often uses animals who act like people, and ends with a lesson. A folktale is passed down by ordinary people, so each family may tell it a bit differently. A myth uses gods or heroes to explain how something in the world came to be. Watch out for one trap: animals on their own do not make a fable. A myth or a folktale can have animals too, so check the other marks before you decide.

Every story has a topic and a central message. The topic is what the story is about, like 'a race between two animals.' The central message is the lesson you learn from what happens, like 'slow and steady wins the race.' They are not the same thing.

**Example.** In 'The Tortoise and the Hare,' the topic is a race. The central message is that steady effort beats a fast start. Three details show this: the hare brags before the race, the hare stops to nap, and the tortoise keeps walking the whole time.

*(drawing: Follow the story beats in order. Each beat is a clue, and together they point to the lesson: slow and steady wins the race.)*

**Example.** A Greek myth tells of Icarus, who flies too close to the sun on wax wings and falls. A Chinese myth tells of Kua Fu, who chases the sun until he collapses from thirst. Different characters, different events, but both teach that ignoring your limits can lead to disaster.

**Tip.** To find the central message, look at what a character does and what happens because of it. The result usually points straight to the lesson.

**Recap.** Every fable, folktale, and myth uses its own details to point to one lesson: find the details, and you find the message.
